서양에서 '성인들의 도덕 교과서'라고 불리며 성서 다음으로 많이 읽힌 책으로도 알려진 이솝우화의 113편을 엮었다. 한 편의 우화가 끝나면 명료하게 한 문장으로 교훈을 제시해주지만, 이솝의 글을 같은 글을 읽더라도 보는 사람마다 다른 풀이를 내놓을 정도로 중의적이고 상징성이 풍부하다. 따라서 자신만의 사고로 이야기를 풀고 해석하는 재미를 느낄 수 있다. 또한 책에는 영문본이 함게 수록되어 있어 한글 번역으로는 느낄 수 없는 이솝특유의 재치와 비판을 원문으로 생생하게 비교해 볼 수 있도록 했다.
『이솝우화』의 작자. 이솝은 그리스 이름 아이소포스(Aisopos)의 영어식 표기이다. 헤로도토스에 따르면 이솝은 BC 6세기 사람으로, 사모스 사람 이아도몬의 노예였으며, 델포이에서 살해되었다고 한다. 그보다 좀 뒤의 기록에는 그가 프리기아인이라는 것과, 그가 살해당한 원인 등이 좀 더 뚜렷이 드러나 있으나, 그 진위는 분명치 않다. 안짱다리, 불룩나온 배, 검고 비할 데 없이 추악한 용모를 가졌다는 유명한 아이소포스 상(像)은, 아득한 후세의 창작에 지나지 않는다. 그의 인생지혜는 세월이 흐를수록 온 세계에 넘쳐 빛을 더하고 있다.
